functionally the maxillae are a pair of accessory jaws.

Here's another example from Mike Mew where the maxilla was brought forward, again without surgery.

The maxilla, the bone of the upper mouth is connected to the cranium and face by several sutures.

I'm pretty sure it's the maxilla and mandible.

In the mouth, the bone beneath the bottom row of teeth is the mandible, and the bone above the top row of teeth is the maxilla.

It's plausible that having this large muscle press up and forwards on the maxilla for 8 hours a day and hopefully while you're sleeping.

This might not sound like a big deal, but the tongue is a relatively big muscle and can exert plenty of force on the maxilla.
