Our goal is to create the ultimate English learning tool for learners around the world, making your journey to mastering English simpler, more efficient, and enjoyable!
Our Story
DictoGo was born out of our own real-world experiences and struggles as English learners.
When learning English, we struggled to find a reliable app that allowed quick and efficient word lookups, convenient ways to remember new vocabulary, and personalized study methods. While Google and other professional dictionaries were available, Google’s results were often too brief and required an internet connection, while professional dictionaries typically offered a poor user experience, making deeper learning difficult.
Our Technology
Our ideal dictionary should provide detailed definitions, tenses, synonyms, antonyms, associated words, phrases, example sentences (especially real-life examples from movies and audio), and syllable breakdowns to aid memorization. However, we discovered that most dictionaries lacked truly localized example databases—often only offering either English or Chinese explanations. Additionally, it was difficult to conveniently build personal vocabulary lists and review them efficiently.
To solve these pain points, we developed DictoGo, offering comprehensive word lookup features and allowing users to download offline dictionaries. We also created a “word player,” letting you effortlessly review vocabulary like listening to music, including spelling, definitions, and examples.
Existing learning tools had their limitations: Duolingo felt slow-paced, YouTube videos weren’t convenient for recording new vocabulary or practicing sentence-by-sentence learning, and pre-designed courses lacked flexibility. Inspired by the 1000-Hour Learning Method advocated by Li Xiaolai, we recognized the need for an effective mobile learning solution, leading us to further develop DictoGo’s specialized study modules:
- Native Language Composition: You can write text in your native language, and DictoGo automatically converts it into spoken English audio for efficient memorization.
- Audio-Based Learning: Import audio files from your cloud storage, and DictoGo automatically extracts subtitles, facilitating sentence-by-sentence study. You can also import YouTube videos, from which DictoGo extracts audio subtitles automatically.
- Learning Albums: Creators can compile customized learning albums and share them with other learners.
Moving forward, we will continue refining our three core modules—word lookup, vocabulary memorization, and article-based learning:
- Word Lookup: Faster and more detailed results.
- Vocabulary Memorization: Flexible and efficient study methods for personal wordbooks or uploaded vocabulary lists.
- Article Learning: Incorporates both reading and listening, transforming various content sources into highly effective sentence-by-sentence study materials.
Our Team
We’re a small yet efficient team of three—a mobile app developer, a backend developer, and a product manager. To maximize productivity, we extensively leverage AI tools, from coding and solving complex problems to dictionary compilation, language localization, and user interface design.
